Sunday Reflections-Local Farms

Local Fuji Apples

I love Fuji apples.
I eat two a day...makes my endocrinologist very happy.
He asked me to cut out as much sugar from my diet as I could.

Per his request, I also cut out all artificial sweeteners and high fructose corn syrup.

I cut out soda.

I still have a bit of sugar everyday but it is limited
to 'a' piece of candy most of the time.

I use agave syrup and honey to bake with, but I moderate those for myself too.

I'm not diabetic...it's for my thyroid.

So apples are my hero...as is my local apple farmer.

We went to a Christmas party at church the other evening and had a great dinner and program...non potluck ham, cheesy potatoes, green beans, salad and rolls.

I was a good girl and didn't go into the 'dessert room' at all. For one thing, it was a potluck dessert room. Which makes my eye twitch.

Some people who live in my house brought home some of the potluck desserts. I had to try a bite of one that looked scrumptious...just a teeny, tiny bite...it was made with love and... rancid oil.

After I gagged, I took it away from the little person and told another person to throw theirs away because of the nice rancid oil flavor.

Yes...I sacrificed myself.

Luckily I'd made banana bread with agave syrup and fresh, non-rancid canola oil. It was baking in the bread machine while we were gone and done when we got home...the house smelled amazing.

I ate a small piece of said banana bread.

People of the world: I implore you,
please check your food products for freshness before
making your masterpiece dish and inflicting it on others.

I will never learn to keep my mouth closed to potluck.

Ever.

I give you permission to smack me if I falter again.

Signing off now.

  3. My husband and I have had many "arguments" about expiration dates! He thinks they don't mean anything! When we were first married, I made my "famous" fried chicken without checking the date and I thought I would gag. Needless to say, we didn't eat it and I purged the cabinet of all "old" goods after that. Nice post, Lindy. I'll have to try the agave syrup.

  4. Dianne...I'm glad my hubby and I are on the same page about expiration dates :) Chicken isn't something to mess with! I could do a whole post on cooking with expired food o.O
